A story of the prophet Hosea’s love for the temple prostitute Gomer and God’s love for us. A love that unfailingly woos and pursues, no matter how far we have wandered. Based on the life and prophecies of Hosea from the book in the Old Testament.
Hosea’s amazing story is recorded in the Old Testament book named after him. He served as a prophet of God from about 760 to 725 BC, during a time when the children of Israel prided themselves on serving not only the one true God Yahweh but also many false gods, called Baals, worshipped by the peoples around them. They thought themselves very cosmopolitan and educated in their acceptance of many gods, despite the evils of Baal worship which included ritual prostitution and even child sacrifice.
The name Hosea is a variant of Joshua or Jesus and means “Savior.” Hosea’s obedience to God’s call for him faithfully to love the faithless Gomer was a living symbol of God’s unfailing love for the wayward children of Israel, and of His yearning to call them back to Himself, even when they had pridefully and willfully wandered into the deepest pits of evil. Hosea is a beautiful foreshadowing of the love and sacrifice of Jesus our Savior.
