2018-2019 Lazarus

The story of a man who got the ultimate second chance, from Luke 10 and John 11 and 12.

The story of Jesus’s friendship with Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha is an intriguing one.  It must have been deeply loving and special because so much of it is recorded in Luke 10 and John 11-12. We know more about Jesus’s interaction with the Lazarus family than we do about his relationships with almost any of his other followers. We catch glimpses into the personalities and faith of Mary and Martha through what is recorded in scripture, but interestingly we know nothing about Lazarus except that Jesus raised him from the dead, and that this miracle caused so much hue and cry in Jerusalem, it prompted the religious leaders there to plot Jesus’s death and to seek to kill Lazarus as well. We do, however, know that Jesus gave Lazarus a second chance at life. The same chance he continues to offer to all of us – and not just to physical life and a chance to right past wrongs, but to eternal spiritual life and participation with God in his kingdom work as well.

The KnoxCAM story provides an imaginative take on the miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, as well as the two other times recorded in scripture in which he interacts with the Lazarus family:  the infamous Martha-overworked scene, and the dinner at which Mary anoints Jesus’s feet with perfume.  As an amazing instance of a man who got the ultimate second chance, we hope the story of Lazarus and his family will resonate deeply with prisoners and others who feel ensnared by the past.
